The Cognitive Abilities Test - Fourth Edition (CAT4)

CAT4 is a collection of tests specifically designed to provide insights for schoolers, helping students to build cognitive abilities and achieve likely academic achievements. CAT4 offers an important source of information to help guide both individual and whole-group teaching strategies, form the basis for individual setting and targeting of students, and track comparative group performance.

CAT4 measures a student’s reasoning and manipulation of various types of material. It contains four clear test batteries, each focusing on key mental processes which make crucially important contributions to human cognition. These four combine to give a complete profile of the common cognitive skills related to learning as they assess a student’s performance in each area of the mental processes.

CAT4 Test Batteries

Each battery contains specific tests that measure different varieties of reasoning and mental processing:

1. Verbal Reasoning Battery

  • Verbal Classification
  • Verbal Analogies

2. Quantitative Reasoning Battery

  • Number Analogies
  • Number Series

3. Non-verbal Reasoning Battery

  • Figure Classification
  • Figure Matrices

4. Spatial Ability Battery

  • Figure Analysis
  • Figure Recognition

Choosing the Appropriate Test Level

CAT4 provides 12 alternative levels of each test for different ages. Overlapping content at each level has been designed with different levels of progressive difficulty so that students of different ages do not feel an abrupt transition in complexity.

Interpretation of Test Scores

Student performance on CAT4 is first reflected in their raw scores, -the number of questions answered correctly. These raw scores are then converted into normative scores by comparing them with the performance of other students in the same age group. The three main types of normative scores provided in the interpretation of CAT4 results are:

  • Standard Age Scores (SAS)
  • National Percentile Rank
  • Stanines

These scores put some context in front of the educators regarding a student’s relative performance compared to his or her peers and also inform them about decisions on learning support and targets for attainment in future academic areas.
